Em escala global, o fluxo de gases entre rios e atmosfera, gases como o di\u00f3xido de carbono, depende diretamente da propor\u00e7\u00e3o da superf\u00edcie coberta pelos rios&#8221;, contextualiza o ge\u00f3grafo George Allen, da Universidade Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"54\" data-block-id=\"5\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">&#8220;Para chegar aos resultados, utilizamos um banco de dados global de hidromorfologia e uma abordagem estat\u00edstica. Mostramos que a \u00e1rea global da superf\u00edcie dos rios \u00e9 de 773 mil quil\u00f4metros quadrados, at\u00e9 44% maior do que estimativas espaciais anteriores&#8221;, explica o ge\u00f3grafo Tamlin Pavelsky, professor de hidrologia global da Universidade da Carolina do Norte.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"47\" data-block-id=\"6\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Mais do que descobrir \u00e1gua doce de forma mais abundante, a import\u00e2ncia cient\u00edfica da descoberta \u00e9 outra: o estudo mostra que a rede fluvial desempenha um papel maior no controle ambiental da Terra, justamente por serem essas superf\u00edcies pontos primordiais nas trocas de carbono com a atmosfera.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"63\" data-block-id=\"7\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Por conta de rea\u00e7\u00f5es denominadas &#8220;de equil\u00edbrio&#8221;, a \u00e1gua que corre pelos rios interage com o ar em uma s\u00e9rie de processos biogeoqu\u00edmicos. S\u00e3o trocas de massa e energia. Para se ter uma ideia, a libera\u00e7\u00e3o de gases pelos rios na atmosfera equivalem a um quinto do total das emiss\u00f5es combinadas da queima de combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis e da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de cimento do globo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"11\" data-block-id=\"8\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Os rios, portanto, t\u00eam um not\u00f3rio papel controlador do calor terrestre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles\" data-block-type=\"raw\" data-block-weight=\"1\" data-block-id=\"9\">\n<div class=\"content-intertitle\">\n<h2>Conta-gotas<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-ads content-ads--reveal\" data-block-type=\"ads\" data-block-id=\"10\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"34\" data-block-id=\"11\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Um par\u00e2metro muito utilizado para determinar a import\u00e2ncia dos rios \u00e9 o volume de \u00e1gua que eles despejam nos oceanos. Antes, apenas dois estudos tentaram estimar a superf\u00edcie total da malha fluvial na Terra.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"44\" data-block-id=\"12\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Em 2012, o professor de Ecologia da Universidade de Iowa John Downing e sua equipe publicaram uma levantamento que chegou a duas estimativas. A mais conservadora afirmava serem 485 mil quil\u00f4metros quadrados de superf\u00edcie. Na outra, o n\u00famero foi de 682 mil quil\u00f4metros quadrados.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"57\" data-block-id=\"13\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Downing realizou c\u00e1lculos a partir de uma situa\u00e7\u00e3o hipot\u00e9tica em que todos os rios do mundo pertenceriam a uma \u00fanica rede fluvial de ramifica\u00e7\u00e3o. Ent\u00e3o, um software de computador p\u00f4de fazer as contas a partir de uma escala entre largura e comprimento desse suposto rio gigante. Como modelo, a pesquisa utilizou o tronco principal do Rio Amazonas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"42\" data-block-id=\"14\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">No ano seguinte, a equipe do qu\u00edmico ambiental Peter Raymond, professor de Ecossistemas Ecol\u00f3gicos da Universidade de Yale, publicou o \u00fanico estudo a estimar a variabilidade espacial da superf\u00edcie dos rios. Sua estimativa foi de uma \u00e1rea de 536 mil quil\u00f4metros quadrados.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"33\" data-block-id=\"15\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">&#8220;Ambos os estudos anteriores s\u00e3o limitados pela falta de observa\u00e7\u00f5es diretas da superf\u00edcie total dos rios, pelas incertezas estat\u00edsticas dos m\u00e9todos aplicados e por conta da variabilidade regional da geometria hidr\u00e1ulica&#8221;, aponta Allen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"35\" data-block-id=\"16\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">No estudo publicado nesta quinta, por outro lado, foram utilizados dados de observa\u00e7\u00e3o por sat\u00e9lite dos rios, com uma abordagem estat\u00edstica capaz de produzir uma estimativa mais precisa da cobertura dos mesmos na superf\u00edcie terrestre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"51\" data-block-id=\"17\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">&#8220;Constru\u00edmos um banco de dados chamado Global River Widths from Landsat (GRWL), que \u00e9 a primeira compila\u00e7\u00e3o global da geometria planificada do rio a uma descarga de frequ\u00eancia constante&#8221;, diz Pavelsky. Para tanto, foi utilizado um banco de dados de 3.693 esta\u00e7\u00f5es que medem varia\u00e7\u00f5es de volumes de rios pelo mundo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"34\" data-block-id=\"18\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Com isto, os pesquisadores exclu\u00edram os meses com maior variabilidade positiva ou negativa do n\u00edvel desses rios, principalmente no caso dos mais sujeitos \u00e0 sazonalidade &#8211; e o estudo se deteve nas vaz\u00f5es m\u00e9dias.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-ads content-ads--reveal\" data-block-type=\"ads\" data-block-id=\"19\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"31\" data-block-id=\"20\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">&#8220;Adquirimos 7.376 imagens de sat\u00e9lite, capturadas durante esses meses da m\u00e9dia. Aplicamos t\u00e9cnicas de processamento de imagens para classificar os rios e medir a localiza\u00e7\u00e3o e a largura&#8221;, explica o pesquisador.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"48\" data-block-id=\"21\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">No total, o banco de dados acumulou mais de 58 milh\u00f5es de medi\u00e7\u00f5es, sendo 2,1 milh\u00f5es de quil\u00f4metros lineares de rios com pelo menos 30 metros de largura em sua vaz\u00e3o m\u00e9dia anual. Na conta tamb\u00e9m entraram 7,6 milh\u00f5es de lagos, reservat\u00f3rio ou canais conectados \u00e0 rede fluvial.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"24\" data-block-id=\"22\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Para ter certeza da viabilidade do m\u00e9todo, os pesquisadores validaram os dados do sistema realizando algumas medi\u00e7\u00f5es in loco em rios americanos e canadenses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"47\" data-block-id=\"23\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">&#8220;Como descobrimos que os dados s\u00e3o mais precisos quanto maior a largura dos rios, na cria\u00e7\u00e3o do modelo estat\u00edstico do software consideramos apenas os dados colhidos em rios de largura superior a 90 metros, o que significa cerca de 3 pixels das imagens de sat\u00e9lite&#8221;, afirma Pavelsky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles\" data-block-type=\"raw\" data-block-weight=\"1\" data-block-id=\"24\">\n<div class=\"content-intertitle\">\n<h2>Sede<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"49\" data-block-id=\"25\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">Ao compilarem os dados, os pesquisadores chegaram a uma conclus\u00e3o alarmente: regi\u00f5es mais desenvolvidas do globo, como os Estados Unidos e a Europa, s\u00e3o as que apresentam menor superf\u00edcie fluvial dispon\u00edvel. &#8220;Isso pode ser em decorr\u00eancia da retirada dessa \u00e1gua para uso, al\u00e9m de sua canaliza\u00e7\u00e3o&#8221;, observa o cientista.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mc-column content-text active-extra-styles \" data-block-type=\"unstyled\" data-block-weight=\"27\" data-block-id=\"26\">\n<p class=\"content-text__container \" data-track-category=\"Link no Texto\" data-track-links=\"\">O efeito pode j\u00e1 ser grande no descontrole ambiental, justamente pela redu\u00e7\u00e3o das possibilidades de trocas gasosas.
