Entre novembro de 2016 e janeiro de 2017, eles escalaram as encostas cobertas de neve do promont\u00f3rio McIntyre acima dos campos de gelo e geleiras, procurando ind\u00edcios nas rochas sedimentares cinzentas nos Montes Transant\u00e1rticos. No final da expedi\u00e7\u00e3o, descobriram 13 fragmentos f\u00f3sseis de \u00e1rvores que remontam a mais de 260 milh\u00f5es de anos, bem pr\u00f3ximo do\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographicbrasil.com\/meio-ambiente\/humanos-sobreviverao-sexta-grande-extincao\">maior evento de extin\u00e7\u00e3o em massa do mundo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A descoberta dos f\u00f3sseis sugere um passado verde e com florestas no continente mais frio e mais seco.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>UMA HIST\u00d3RIA VERDE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;O continente como um todo era muito mais quente e mais \u00famido do que \u00e9 hoje&#8221;, diz\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/people\/gulbranson-erik\/\">Gulbranson<\/a>, professor da Universidade de Wisconsin, em Milwaukee. A paisagem seria densamente preenchida por florestas com uma rede de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucmp.berkeley.edu\/seedplants\/pteridosperms\/glossopterids.html\">plantas resistentes<\/a>\u00a0de baixa diversidade que poderia resistir a extremos polares, como a floresta boreal na atual Sib\u00e9ria.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Curiosamente, esses campos estariam realmente pr\u00f3ximos da sua atual latitude&#8221;, acrescenta.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div>\n<p>Os f\u00f3sseis preservaram a biologia e a qu\u00edmica das \u00e1rvores antigas, o que ajudar\u00e1 os pesquisadores a investigarem mais sobre esses ecossistemas de alta latitude e descobrir como algumas plantas sobreviveram ao evento de extin\u00e7\u00e3o e por que outras n\u00e3o. Com a mistura dos continentes, os extremos ambientais atormentavam a massa gigante de terra, o que inclu\u00eda partes da Am\u00e9rica do Norte moderna, Am\u00e9rica do Sul, \u00c1frica, \u00cdndia, Austr\u00e1lia e a Pen\u00ednsula Ar\u00e1bica.
